Core War
One of the oldest programming games, first described in 1984. Two or more programs, called warriors, share a simulated computer memory and try to stop each other.
How you code
You write warriors in Redcode, a small assembly language. The programs take turns executing in the same circular memory, and a warrior loses when its process runs an invalid instruction, so warriors bomb memory, copy themselves around or hunt for their opponent. Players test warriors against each other on public "hills".
