Battlecode

A yearly programming competition run by MIT, built around a new real-time strategy game each season. Teams write an AI that manages a robot army against another team's AI.
How you code
You write the player in a real language (Java, and in recent seasons also Python). Every robot runs its own copy of your code with limited information and limited computation per turn, so you need pathfinding, communication between robots and an overall strategy. Your player then competes in scrimmages and tournaments.
